How the rating works

Every game starts with a Matrix Picks score, based on how it's regarded (certified classic, well-known or deep cut), how widely it's known, our own picks and, where it has them, player ratings on IGDB. That way nothing sits at zero, and a single early rating can't make or break a game.

Each player rating then moves the number. The starting score counts the same as 8 ratings, so after a couple of dozen ratings the players' average is most of what you see. Until a game has any player ratings, its page says "Matrix Picks score" rather than pretending to be a community number.

One rating per account, and accounts count from their second day, so a burst of brand new sign-ups can't swing a score. Ratings you make before signing in are kept in your browser and added when you sign in.
