Super Mario World is a platformer released in 1990 for the Super Nintendo, developed by Nintendo. Depending on the region, you may also know it as Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4.

It belongs to the SNES's earliest wave of games. Other notable SNES releases from 1990 include F-Zero, ActRaiser and Pilotwings. Among the 140 SNES platformers in our database, it ranks #1 by legacy score.

It is part of the Super Mario Bros series; on the SNES you can also try Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The series also appears on other systems with Super Mario Bros. (NES) and Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES). Nintendo also made The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario Kart and Super Metroid for the SNES.

Super Mario World supports up to 2 players, whether that means taking turns or going head-to-head.

  • you want to experience one of the SNES's defining games

Maybe skip it if…

  • you get frustrated by precise jumps and limited lives

What playing Super Mario World is like

Platformers are all about movement: running, jumping and timing your way across levels full of gaps, enemies and secrets. The best ones feel great to control within seconds and then slowly teach you to master every leap.

Tip for newcomers: Retro platformers often have limited lives and few checkpoints. Learn one level at a time, look for hidden 1-ups, and don't be shy about using a save feature when it is available.
