Released for the Super Nintendo in 1996, Kirby Super Star is an action-adventure game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. Depending on the region, you may also know it as Kirby's Fun Pak. It blends action-adventure, action and platformer elements.

It landed about 5 years into the SNES's life. Other notable SNES releases from 1996 include Super Mario RPG, FIFA 97 and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. Among the 23 SNES action-adventure games in our database, it ranks #3 by legacy score.

It is part of the Kirby series; on the SNES you can also try Kirby's Dream Land 3, Kirby's Avalanche and Kirby's Dream Course. The series also appears on other systems with Kirby's Adventure (NES) and Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy). HAL Laboratory also made Alcahest, Arcana and Hyper Zone for the SNES.

Kirby Super Star supports up to 2 players, including cooperative play, which makes it a strong pick for playing with a friend.

Pick it if…

  • you want to get lost in a long quest
  • you have time for a weekend project (roughly 6–20 hours)
  • you want a game to beat together with a friend
  • you want to experience one of the SNES's defining games

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a game you can finish in one short session

What playing Kirby Super Star is like

Action-adventures blend real-time combat with exploration, puzzles and item collection. You open up a larger world gradually as new tools let you reach places you couldn't before.

Tip for newcomers: Keep a mental (or paper) map of locked doors and unreachable ledges; most action-adventures expect you to come back once you find the right item.
