Developed by Namco, Ridge Racer arrived on the PlayStation in 1994 as a racing game. This PS1 release is a port or adaptation of a game that first appeared in 1993.

It belongs to the PS1's earliest wave of games. Other notable PS1 releases from 1994 include King's Field, Motor Toon Grand Prix and Crime Crackers.

It is part of the Ridge Racer series; on the PS1 you can also try R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, Rage Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution. The series also appears on other systems with RR64: Ridge Racer 64 (N64). Namco also made Tekken 2, Ace Combat 3 and Air Combat for the PS1.

This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.

Pick it if…

  • you want to race and compete
  • you have time for a quick session (under an hour, or endless arcade fun)

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a story or exploration rather than laps
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Ridge Racer is like

Racing games range from realistic driving to kart racers with weapons and shortcuts. Races are short, making them great for quick sessions and split-screen rivalries.

Tip for newcomers: Learn each track's racing line and braking points; in kart racers, item strategy matters as much as driving.
