Developed by Namco, Rage Racer arrived on the PlayStation in 1996 as a racing game.

It came out in the PS1's second year on the market. Other notable PS1 releases from 1996 include Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot. Among the 160 PS1 racing games in our database, it ranks #25 by legacy score.

It is part of the Ridge Racer series; on the PS1 you can also try R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, Ridge Racer Revolution and Ridge Racer. The series also appears on other systems with RR64: Ridge Racer 64 (N64). Namco also made Tekken 2, Ace Combat 3 and Air Combat for the PS1.

This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.

Pick it if…

  • you want to race and compete
  • you have time for a quick session (under an hour, or endless arcade fun)
  • you want to experience one of the PS1's defining games

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a story or exploration rather than laps
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Rage Racer is like

Racing games range from realistic driving to kart racers with weapons and shortcuts. Races are short, making them great for quick sessions and split-screen rivalries.

Tip for newcomers: Learn each track's racing line and braking points; in kart racers, item strategy matters as much as driving.
