Madagascar is an action-adventure game released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS, developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision. It blends action-adventure and platformer elements.

It came out in the DS's second year on the market. Other notable DS releases from 2005 include Mario Kart DS, Nintendogs and Super Mario 64 DS.

It is part of the Madagascar series; on the DS you can also try Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Madagascar Kartz and Madagascar 3: The Video Game. The series also appears on other systems with Madagascar (GBA) and Madagascar: Operation Penguin (GBA). Vicarious Visions also made Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man 2 for the DS.

Madagascar supports up to 2 players, whether that means taking turns or going head-to-head.

Pick it if…

  • you want to get lost in a long quest
  • you have time for a weekend project (roughly 6–20 hours)
  • you have a friend to play against

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a game you can finish in one short session

What playing Madagascar is like

Action-adventures blend real-time combat with exploration, puzzles and item collection. You open up a larger world gradually as new tools let you reach places you couldn't before.

Tip for newcomers: Keep a mental (or paper) map of locked doors and unreachable ledges; most action-adventures expect you to come back once you find the right item.
