Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition is a fighting game released in 1993 for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, developed by Capcom and published by SEGA.

It landed about 4 years into the Genesis's life. Other notable Genesis releases from 1993 include Mortal Kombat, Flashback and Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball.

It is part of the Street Fighter series; on the Genesis you can also try Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers and Street Fighter II: Champion Edition. The series also appears on other systems with Street Fighter Alpha (PS1) and Street Fighter III (Dreamcast). Capcom also made Ghouls 'n Ghosts, The Punisher and Mega Man: The Wily Wars for the Genesis.

Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition supports up to 2 players, whether that means taking turns or going head-to-head.

Pick it if…

  • you want to fight, blast and test your reflexes
  • you have time for a quick session (under an hour, or endless arcade fun)
  • you have a friend to play against
  • you've played the Genesis hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you prefer story-driven games or have no one to play against

What playing Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition is like

Fighting games pit two characters against each other in short one-on-one bouts. Depth comes from learning special moves, combos and each character's strengths.

Tip for newcomers: Pick one character and learn their basic special moves before branching out. Fighting games are at their best against a friend at a similar skill level.
