Micro Machines is a racing game released in 1993 for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, developed by Codemasters.

It landed about 4 years into the Genesis's life. Other notable Genesis releases from 1993 include Mortal Kombat, Flashback and Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball.

It is part of the MicroMachines series; on the Genesis you can also try Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament, Micro Machines: Military and Micro Machines: Turbo Tournament '96. The series also appears on other systems with Micro Machines (NES) and Micro Machines (SNES). Codemasters also made Psycho Pinball, Pete Sampras Tennis and Sampras Tennis 96 for the Genesis.

Micro Machines supports up to 2 players, whether that means taking turns or going head-to-head.

Pick it if…

  • you want to race and compete
  • you have time for a quick session (under an hour, or endless arcade fun)
  • you have a friend to play against
  • you've played the Genesis hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a story or exploration rather than laps

What playing Micro Machines is like

Racing games range from realistic driving to kart racers with weapons and shortcuts. Races are short, making them great for quick sessions and split-screen rivalries.

Tip for newcomers: Learn each track's racing line and braking points; in kart racers, item strategy matters as much as driving.
