Micro Machines is a racing game released in 1994 for the Super Nintendo, developed by Merit Studios and published by Ocean. This SNES release is a port or adaptation of a game that first appeared in 1991.

It landed about 3 years into the SNES's life. Other notable SNES releases from 1994 include Final Fantasy VI, Donkey Kong Country and Super Metroid.

It is part of the MicroMachines series; on the SNES you can also try Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament. The series also appears on other systems with Micro Machines (NES) and Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament (Genesis).

Micro Machines supports up to 4 players, whether that means taking turns or going head-to-head.

Pick it if…

  • you want to race and compete
  • you have time for a quick session (under an hour, or endless arcade fun)
  • you have a friend to play against
  • you've played the SNES hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a story or exploration rather than laps

What playing Micro Machines is like

Racing games range from realistic driving to kart racers with weapons and shortcuts. Races are short, making them great for quick sessions and split-screen rivalries.

Tip for newcomers: Learn each track's racing line and braking points; in kart racers, item strategy matters as much as driving.
