Developed by Sunsoft, Batman arrived on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive in 1990 as an action game. It blends action, beat 'em up and platformer elements.
It came out in the Genesis's second year on the market. Other notable Genesis releases from 1990 include Populous, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker and Super Monaco GP.
It is part of the Batman series; on the Genesis you can also try Batman Forever, The Adventures of Batman & Robin and Batman Returns. The series also appears on other systems with Batman: The Video Game (NES) and Batman Forever (SNES). Sunsoft also made The Death and Return of Superman, Super Fantasy Zone and Tel-Tel Mahjong for the Genesis.
This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.
Pick it if…
- you want to fight, blast and test your reflexes
- you have time for an evening or two (roughly 1–6 hours to see it through)
Maybe skip it if…
- you prefer slow, thoughtful games over reflex tests
- you are looking for something to play with friends
What playing Batman is like
Action games test reflexes and nerve. Expect fast enemies, tight controls and stages you clear by reacting quickly and learning enemy patterns.
Tip for newcomers: Retro action games are often short but tough. Treat early deaths as practice runs; every attempt teaches you where the next threat comes from.
