Released for the Super Nintendo in 1992, Monopoly is a strategy game developed by Parker Brothers and published by Sculptured Software.

It came out in the SNES's second year on the market. Other notable SNES releases from 1992 include The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario Kart and Final Fantasy V.

It is part of the Monopoly series; on the SNES you can also try The Monopoly Game 2. The series also appears on other systems with Monopoly (NES) and Monopoly (N64).

Monopoly supports up to 8 players, whether that means taking turns or going head-to-head.

Pick it if…

  • you want to think and plan
  • you have time for a weekend project (roughly 6–20 hours)
  • you have a friend to play against
  • you've played the SNES hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want quick action without planning ahead

What playing Monopoly is like

Strategy games reward planning over reflexes: command armies, manage resources and outthink opponents on turn-based or real-time battlefields.

Tip for newcomers: Read the manual or tutorial if one exists: retro strategy games often assume you know their rules. Save between missions.
