Released for the Super Nintendo in 1995, Fatal Fury Special is a fighting game developed by Takuyo and published by SNK. This SNES release is a port or adaptation of a game that first appeared in 1993. It blends fighting and action elements.

It landed about 4 years into the SNES's life. Other notable SNES releases from 1995 include Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

It is part of the Fatal Fury series; on the SNES you can also try Fatal Fury 2 and Fatal Fury: King of Fighters. The series also appears on other systems with Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition (PS1) and Fatal Fury 2 (Neo Geo). Takuyo also made Cyber Spin for the SNES.

Fatal Fury Special supports up to 2 players, whether that means taking turns or going head-to-head.

Pick it if…

  • you want to fight, blast and test your reflexes
  • you have time for a quick session (under an hour, or endless arcade fun)
  • you have a friend to play against
  • you've played the SNES hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you prefer story-driven games or have no one to play against

What playing Fatal Fury Special is like

Fighting games pit two characters against each other in short one-on-one bouts. Depth comes from learning special moves, combos and each character's strengths.

Tip for newcomers: Pick one character and learn their basic special moves before branching out. Fighting games are at their best against a friend at a similar skill level.
