Doom is a shooter released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo, developed by Sculptured Software and published by Ocean. This SNES release is a port or adaptation of a game that first appeared in 1993. It blends shooter, horror and action elements.

It landed about 5 years into the SNES's life. Other notable SNES releases from 1996 include Super Mario RPG, FIFA 97 and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. Among the 26 SNES shooters in our database, it ranks #3 by legacy score.

It is part of the Doom series. The series also appears on other systems with Doom 64 (N64) and Final Doom (PS1). Sculptured Software also made WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game, Super Star Wars and Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back for the SNES.

Doom is a single-player game, so it's one to enjoy at your own pace.

Pick it if…

  • you want to fight, blast and test your reflexes
  • you have time for an evening or two (roughly 1–6 hours to see it through)
  • you want to experience one of the SNES's defining games

Maybe skip it if…

  • you are not a fan of fast-paced aiming and twitch reflexes
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Doom is like

Shooters are built around aiming and firing, from first-person corridor blasters and light-gun games to run-and-gun stages and multidirectional arcade shooters.

Tip for newcomers: Retro shooters were designed for CRT TVs and original controllers; light-gun games in particular need special hardware or alternative controls on modern screens.
