Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment America, Spyro the Dragon arrived on the PlayStation in 1998 as a platformer. It blends platformer and action elements.

It landed about 3 years into the PS1's life. Other notable PS1 releases from 1998 include Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2 and Tomb Raider II. Among the 77 PS1 platformers in our database, it ranks #2 by legacy score.

It is part of the Spyro series; on the PS1 you can also try Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. The series also appears on other systems with Spyro: Season of Ice (GBA) and Spyro 2: Season of Flame (GBA). Insomniac Games also made Disruptor for the PS1.

This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.

What playing Spyro the Dragon is like

Platformers are all about movement: running, jumping and timing your way across levels full of gaps, enemies and secrets. The best ones feel great to control within seconds and then slowly teach you to master every leap.

Tip for newcomers: Retro platformers often have limited lives and few checkpoints. Learn one level at a time, look for hidden 1-ups, and don't be shy about using a save feature when it is available.
