Developed by Reflections Interactive and published by Spike, Driver arrived on the PlayStation in 2000 as a racing game. It blends racing and action elements.

It landed about 5 years into the PS1's life. Other notable PS1 releases from 2000 include Final Fantasy IX, Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Among the 160 PS1 racing games in our database, it ranks #9 by legacy score.

It is part of the Driver series; on the PS1 you can also try Driver 2. The series also appears on other systems with Driver 3 (GBA) and Driver: You Are the Wheelman (GBC). Reflections Interactive also made Destruction Derby 2 and Monster Trucks for the PS1.

Driver is a single-player game, so it's one to enjoy at your own pace.

Pick it if…

  • you want to race and compete
  • you have time for a quick session (under an hour, or endless arcade fun)
  • you want to experience one of the PS1's defining games

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a story or exploration rather than laps
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Driver is like

Racing games range from realistic driving to kart racers with weapons and shortcuts. Races are short, making them great for quick sessions and split-screen rivalries.

Tip for newcomers: Learn each track's racing line and braking points; in kart racers, item strategy matters as much as driving.
