Released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, Quake is a shooter developed by Midway and published by GT Interactive. Depending on the region, you may also know it as Quake 64. This N64 release is a port or adaptation of a game that first appeared in 1996.

It landed about 2 years into the N64's life. Other notable N64 releases from 1998 include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, 1080° Snowboarding and Mario Party. Among the 23 N64 shooters in our database, it ranks #7 by legacy score.

It is part of the Quake series; on the N64 you can also try Quake II. The series also appears on other systems with Quake (Dreamcast) and Quake (Saturn). Midway also made Doom 64, Mortal Kombat Trilogy and California Speed for the N64.

Quake supports up to 2 players, including cooperative play, which makes it a strong pick for playing with a friend.

Pick it if…

  • you want to fight, blast and test your reflexes
  • you have time for an evening or two (roughly 1–6 hours to see it through)
  • you want a game to beat together with a friend

Maybe skip it if…

  • you are not a fan of fast-paced aiming and twitch reflexes

What playing Quake is like

Shooters are built around aiming and firing, from first-person corridor blasters and light-gun games to run-and-gun stages and multidirectional arcade shooters.

Tip for newcomers: Retro shooters were designed for CRT TVs and original controllers; light-gun games in particular need special hardware or alternative controls on modern screens.
