Ecco The Dolphin is an adventure game released in 1994 for the Sega Game Gear, developed by Novotrade and published by SEGA.

It landed about 3 years into the Game Gear's life. Other notable Game Gear releases from 1994 include Sonic Drift, Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble and Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya.

It is part of the Ecco the Dolphin series; on the Game Gear you can also try Ecco: The Tides of Time. The series also appears on other systems with Ecco the Dolphin (Genesis) and Ecco: The Tides of Time (Genesis). Novotrade also made Evander Holyfield's 'Real Deal' Boxing and Garfield: Caught in the Act for the Game Gear.

This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.

Pick it if…

  • you want to get lost in a long quest
  • you have time for a weekend project (roughly 6–20 hours)
  • you've played the Game Gear hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want fast action rather than puzzles and exploration
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Ecco The Dolphin is like

Adventure games focus on exploration, story and puzzle-solving rather than combat. Progress comes from examining your surroundings, collecting items and figuring out how they fit together.

Tip for newcomers: Classic adventure games can be cryptic by modern standards. Take notes, try everything on everything, and save before risky choices.
