Released for the Game Boy Color in 1999, Test Drive 6 is a racing game developed by Xantera and published by Infogrames.

It came out in the GBC's second year on the market. Other notable GBC releases from 1999 include Pokémon Pinball, Conker's Pocket Tales and Bugs Bunny & Lola Bunny: Operation Carrot Patch.

It is part of the Test Drive series; on the GBC you can also try Test Drive 2001, Test Drive Le Mans and Test Drive Off-Road 3. The series also appears on other systems with Test Drive 6 (PS1) and Test Drive Le Mans (PS1). Xantera also made Looney Tunes Racing, Rocky Mountain: Trophy Hunter and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2000 for the GBC.

This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.

Pick it if…

  • you want to race and compete
  • you have time for a quick session (under an hour, or endless arcade fun)
  • you've played the GBC hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a story or exploration rather than laps
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Test Drive 6 is like

Racing games range from realistic driving to kart racers with weapons and shortcuts. Races are short, making them great for quick sessions and split-screen rivalries.

Tip for newcomers: Learn each track's racing line and braking points; in kart racers, item strategy matters as much as driving.
