Released for the Game Boy Color in 1999, Grand Theft Auto is an action-adventure game developed by Tarantula Studios and published by Take 2 Interactive. It blends action-adventure and racing elements.
It came out in the GBC's second year on the market. Other notable GBC releases from 1999 include Pokémon Pinball, Conker's Pocket Tales and Bugs Bunny & Lola Bunny: Operation Carrot Patch.
It is part of the Grand Theft Auto series; on the GBC you can also try Grand Theft Auto 2. The series also appears on other systems with Grand Theft Auto (PS1) and Grand Theft Auto 2 (PS1). Tarantula Studios also made Austin Powers: Oh, Behave!, Austin Powers: Welcome to My Underground Lair! and Evel Knievel for the GBC.
This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.
Pick it if…
- you want to get lost in a long quest
- you have time for a weekend project (roughly 6–20 hours)
- you've played the GBC hits and want something less obvious
Maybe skip it if…
- you want a game you can finish in one short session
- you are looking for something to play with friends
What playing Grand Theft Auto is like
Action-adventures blend real-time combat with exploration, puzzles and item collection. You open up a larger world gradually as new tools let you reach places you couldn't before.
Tip for newcomers: Keep a mental (or paper) map of locked doors and unreachable ledges; most action-adventures expect you to come back once you find the right item.
