Barbie: Ocean Discovery is an action game released in 1999 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Realtime Associates and published by Mattel Electronics.

It came out in the GBC's second year on the market. Other notable GBC releases from 1999 include Pokémon Pinball, Conker's Pocket Tales and Bugs Bunny & Lola Bunny: Operation Carrot Patch.

It is part of the Barbie series; on the GBC you can also try Barbie: Magic Genie Adventure, Kelly Club: Clubhouse Fun and Barbie: Fashion Pack Games. The series also appears on other systems with Barbie (NES) and Barbie: Super Model (SNES). Realtime Associates also made All-Star Baseball 2000 and Caterpillar Construction Zone for the GBC.

Barbie: Ocean Discovery is a single-player game, so it's one to enjoy at your own pace.

Pick it if…

  • you want to fight, blast and test your reflexes
  • you have time for an evening or two (roughly 1–6 hours to see it through)
  • you've played the GBC hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you prefer slow, thoughtful games over reflex tests
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Barbie: Ocean Discovery is like

Action games test reflexes and nerve. Expect fast enemies, tight controls and stages you clear by reacting quickly and learning enemy patterns.

Tip for newcomers: Retro action games are often short but tough. Treat early deaths as practice runs; every attempt teaches you where the next threat comes from.
