Released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, Top Gun: Combat Zones is a shooter developed by Titus and published by Mastiff.

It landed about 3 years into the GBA's life. Other notable GBA releases from 2004 include The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Sonic Advance 3.

It is part of the Top Gun series; on the GBA you can also try Top Gun: Firestorm. The series also appears on other systems with Top Gun: The Second Mission (NES) and Top Gun: Guts and Glory (Game Boy). Titus also made Virtual Kasparov, Prehistorik Man and Kao the Kangaroo for the GBA.

This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.

Pick it if…

  • you want to fight, blast and test your reflexes
  • you have time for an evening or two (roughly 1–6 hours to see it through)
  • you've played the GBA hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you are not a fan of fast-paced aiming and twitch reflexes
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Top Gun: Combat Zones is like

Shooters are built around aiming and firing, from first-person corridor blasters and light-gun games to run-and-gun stages and multidirectional arcade shooters.

Tip for newcomers: Retro shooters were designed for CRT TVs and original controllers; light-gun games in particular need special hardware or alternative controls on modern screens.
