Developed by Torus Games and published by Activision, Pitfall: The Lost Expedition arrived on the Game Boy Advance in 2004 as an action-adventure game. It blends action-adventure and platformer elements.

It landed about 3 years into the GBA's life. Other notable GBA releases from 2004 include The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Sonic Advance 3.

It is part of the Pitfall series; on the GBA you can also try Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure. The series also appears on other systems with Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (SNES) and Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (Genesis). Torus Games also made Space Invaders, Doom II and Duke Nukem Advance for the GBA.

This is a solo experience: one player, no waiting on anyone else.

Pick it if…

  • you want to get lost in a long quest
  • you have time for a weekend project (roughly 6–20 hours)
  • you've played the GBA hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a game you can finish in one short session
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Pitfall: The Lost Expedition is like

Action-adventures blend real-time combat with exploration, puzzles and item collection. You open up a larger world gradually as new tools let you reach places you couldn't before.

Tip for newcomers: Keep a mental (or paper) map of locked doors and unreachable ledges; most action-adventures expect you to come back once you find the right item.
