Developed by Climax Studios and published by THQ, Nicktoons Unite! arrived on the Game Boy Advance in 2005 as an action-adventure game. Depending on the region, you may also know it as SpongeBob SquarePants and Friends Unite!. It blends action-adventure and platformer elements.

It landed about 4 years into the GBA's life. Other notable GBA releases from 2005 include Pokémon Emerald, Mario Party Advance and WarioWare: Twisted!.

It is part of the Spongebob Squarepants series; on the GBA you can also try Nicktoons: Freeze Frame Frenzy, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom and SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab. The series also appears on other systems with SpongeBob SquarePants: Legend of the Lost Spatula (GBC). Climax Studios also made Serious Sam Advance, Ed, Edd n Eddy: Jawbreakers! and Disney's Herbie: Fully Loaded for the GBA.

Nicktoons Unite! is a single-player game, so it's one to enjoy at your own pace.

Pick it if…

  • you want to get lost in a long quest
  • you have time for a weekend project (roughly 6–20 hours)
  • you've played the GBA hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you want a game you can finish in one short session
  • you are looking for something to play with friends

What playing Nicktoons Unite! is like

Action-adventures blend real-time combat with exploration, puzzles and item collection. You open up a larger world gradually as new tools let you reach places you couldn't before.

Tip for newcomers: Keep a mental (or paper) map of locked doors and unreachable ledges; most action-adventures expect you to come back once you find the right item.
