Released for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, Magical Quest Starring Mickey & Minnie is a platformer developed by Capcom and published by Nintendo.

It came out in the GBA's second year on the market. Other notable GBA releases from 2002 include Sonic Advance 2, Metroid Fusion and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Four Swords.

It is part of the Mickey Mouse series; on the GBA you can also try Disney's Party, Magical Quest 2 Starring Mickey & Minnie and Magical Quest 3 Starring Mickey & Donald. The series also appears on other systems with Mickey Mania (SNES) and Mickey Mania (Genesis). Capcom also made Mega Man Battle Network, Mega Man Battle Network 2 and Mega Man Battle Network 3 for the GBA.

Magical Quest Starring Mickey & Minnie supports up to 2 players, whether that means taking turns or going head-to-head.

Pick it if…

  • you want to run, jump and explore
  • you have time for an evening or two (roughly 1–6 hours to see it through)
  • you have a friend to play against
  • you've played the GBA hits and want something less obvious

Maybe skip it if…

  • you get frustrated by precise jumps and limited lives

What playing Magical Quest Starring Mickey & Minnie is like

Platformers are all about movement: running, jumping and timing your way across levels full of gaps, enemies and secrets. The best ones feel great to control within seconds and then slowly teach you to master every leap.

Tip for newcomers: Retro platformers often have limited lives and few checkpoints. Learn one level at a time, look for hidden 1-ups, and don't be shy about using a save feature when it is available.
